Written by a Roman tax collector who dropped everything to become one of the twelve apostles, this account of Jesus life is aimed squarely at the Jews. Its Jewish writer believes that Jesus was sent by God to fulfil his promises to them. Other records are easier to read, but few make so many crucial links between Jewish prophecy and the teaching of Jesus as the book written by Matthew.
