Riches attempts to show the way in which New Testament scholar Rudolph Bultmann dominated the discipline in this century by achieving a unique synthesis of theological and historical interpretation of the New Testament, and the extent to which that synthesis has subsequently been undermined so that a complete reworking is now required.
