Polycarp was a disciple of the Apostle John and Bishop of Smyrna (a city in modern-day Turkey). During the days of the Roman Empire persecution of Christians was rife and many faced death rather than deny their faith in Jesus. It was a challenging time to be a Christian. Polycarp's strong faith in Jesus Christ helped this elderly Christian face his enemies with steadfastness and courage.
