Marriage is not the blending of two worlds, but the creation of a new one. Marriage is not a perpetual struggle to establish personal rights, but a harmonious outworking of different roles and responsibilities. Marriage is not about defending independence and personal space, but about unselfishly providing support for one another. Marriage is not the fulfilment of dream images, but the grateful acceptance of a precious gift from God in the person of my spouse. Marriage is not the avoidance of conflict, sorrow or difficulties, but the maturing of love through them. Marriage is not the last priority after career, ministry, children, other people and pastimes, but the first after God. The essence of marriage is oneness. Its joy lies in the sweetness of the relationship: loving-kindness, friendship, compassion, empathy, respect, closeness, mutual esteem, encouragement and passionate tenderness.
