Somehow, in the course of my years in the church, I unconsciously came to believe that God wanted me to have authority over the women in my life. The beginning of my marriage to Sheri was tumultuous, mostly because I didn’t know how to relate to a strong woman. It took years of painfully learning how to build a healthy marriage until I understood Sheri’s struggle to find her place in the Church world as a “powerful” woman. In search of answers, I found what seemed like obvious verses in the Bible that reinforced my original belief system. However, no one around me actually practiced those verses. Women could talk in church; some women spoke from the front as teachers. None had their heads covered, and most wore jewelry and make-up. Even so, Sheri still felt devalued, as if she had not always been seen for the leadership gifting that was so prominent within her. And, there was still a covert belief in my understanding of these Scriptures that made me feel like I carried a “final answer” trump card when it came to women.
In order for Sheri and me to become a team of powerful people, we had to put aside the male-female hierarchy that we inherited from Church tradition. I needed to tear up my male trump card because it had effectively made me the only powerful person in our relationship. Neither one of us was fully thriving because our relationship was built on distrust and power-plays rather than the “oneness” God calls married couples to.
This book is an explanation as to why this traditional mindset must change. It provides insight on the positive experiences of male and female interactions with “powerful women,” and strategies for how to change what has been passed down for generations on end—not only in church government, but also in our personal relationships.
