Paul was born in 1961 and grew up in Cambridge. He was ordained a Catholic priest in his home parish in January 1989 and served his first curacy in Bury St Edmunds. In 1991 he was appointed Private Secretary to Bishop Alan Clark of East Anglia and then served his successor, Bishop Peter Smith.
In 1999 he was appointed Administrator at St John’s Cathedral in Norwich before moving again in 2001 to become parish priest at St Ives, near Cambridge.
